Information system, is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for providing information, knowledge, and digital products. Business firms and other organizations rely on information systems to carry out and manage their operations, interact with their customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace. Information systems are used to run inter-organizational supply chains and electronic markets.
Information systems have transformed the following industries and sectors.
Publishing
The rise of the audiobook - The first area of publishing that has been heavily affected by technology is books. This means that the audio part of the book to be read is recorded and listened too.
The decline of newspapers - A key problem affecting the newspaper industry is less of a technological issue, and more of an online one. Tabloids have been particularly affected as more and more readers are turning to social media to get their showbiz fix. Why buy a newspaper to read about what celebrities are up to, when you can follow, and even interact with them directly on Instagram? Meanwhile, many others turn to 24-hour news channels or websites to follow what is going on in the world.
A digital future for publishing - The internet has had as profound an affect on publishing as the Gutenberg printing press. But rather than just driving the demise of print, embracing the latest technology could also help significantly boost the industry and help secure its future.
Automotive
Self-driving systems are on the radar – Audi’s adaptive cruise control is an example of a system with a built-in stop and go function. It takes the collaboration of 30 control units to analyze the surrounding environment of the vehicle. The Audi’s cruise control regulates the speed according to the distance between the driver's car and the vehicle ahead all the way from 0 to 155 mph.
Greater user interactivity - As computers have become more central to the mass production of automobiles, the capacity for user interactivity has increased enormously. Today, every car produced has some kind of onboard computer that controls a wide range of functions.
Smart car technologies - Technologies like Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto enable users to enjoy the functionality of a phone without having to pick one up. In practice, this means that people will spend much less time looking at their phones as they’ll be able to interact with a larger user interface instead.
Telecommunication
In the age of digitization all the telecommunication companies are also facing pressure to transform digitally. Modern technological advancements are disrupting the sector and also have raised consumer expectations. So, to satisfy the customers, companies are bound to adopt these technologies.
Film
Editing - Post production is another area where digital trumps the usage of film. Adding visual effects to film was often a precise art, where the effect had to blend seamlessly with what was being shot. This was a painstaking process that editors no longer go through. Digital effects are created and added to the shot within the same program or family of programs. This software also allows editors to work on entire sections of a film, easily piecing scenes together after the post production effects are added in. That includes audio, which now has a high definition digital file that ensures the audience will hear every word and action that they see.
Shooting - Shooting in digital is much easier because you can do more in less time. Multiple cameras can run on the same shot, so you always get the angle you want without having to waste time on retakes. I like shooting digitally because it makes it easy to shoot multiple takes, and to get multiple angles more economically. A director’s bread and butter is pace and performance. I love being able to shoot everything. Even, with the actors’ permission, the rehearsals. You never know what pieces you’ll be able to use later in editing.
Preservation - The preservation of film isn’t something we think about as consumers, but it’s the very reason we still have re-mastered copies of Ben Hurr and the Star Wars trilogy. Film will crumble and damage over time, and it’s extremely flammable too. There are simply too many methods for film to outlive its usefulness. Digital films can be stored on company servers, without taking up too much space. The costs to maintain this infrastructure are also lower than the costs to store and re-master film.
